Just Back from Vegas

Posted on September 21, 2008

This time, it was for business. VMworld was at the Venetian Hotel. So were a lot of people. Too many people. Or so it seemed. Maybe the place wasn’t designed for so many people moving about at the same time? It was crazy when the conference sessions were over, with everyone moving from point A to point B.

The number of people didn’t bother me as much as the lack of available wireless connectivity. Apparently everyone had a wireless device, whether it’s their laptop or their PDA (or both!). I spoke with their “Wireless Help Desk” and the best answer they gave me was that they didn’t anticipate the huge number of devices trying to connect. I thought that was silly, as you’d expect almost everyone attending the conference to have something to connect back to their workplace. I mean, wouldn’t the employer expect the employee to report back somehow, considering the cost to attend the conference was a minimum of $1,500(!)?

But since I live in the Bay Area, I will say it’s much preferable to be there than the Moscone Center in San Francisco. After the conference is over, I can get a nice dinner and catch a show. Or just watch people gamble away their money. Apparently I have interest in someone (anyone) betting yellow $1,000 chips on blackjack. And gamblers betting $100 bills at the No-Limit cash poker tables at the Bellagio. I’ve never seen that at the casinos before (only on TV), where not only will players raise in increments of $10 chips, but also with cold hard Benjamins.

Speaking of money, I saw a couple of cars (a Ferrari and a Rolls Royce or Bentley) with “MONEY MAYWEATHER” emblems on the back. I wonder who those cars belonged to? Hmmm…
