Stromboli

Posted on August 28, 2007

Stromboli is a tiny volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, north of Sicily. It’s an active volcano, and has been in continuous eruption for thousands of years. It mostly spews out ash and lava fragments, but there has been lava flow (as recently as 2002).

But what’s intriguing is the fact that there are hundreds of people who actually make their home on the island. Although the volcano’s activities could be predicted, it’s not a guarantee it’s going to behave the way it did yesterday. Their homes could be destroyed. So why do they live there? I understand they make their living through fishing and tourism (apparently the volano is a big enough tourist attraction). Nevertheless that’s a big risk they’re taking living there. Or maybe they don’t have a boat to get off the island.

Obviously we didn’t get off the ship to visit this island. We cruised right on by. I heard the island was on the highest alert, and at any time they could be told to evacuate because of the volcanic activities. It was mostly a slow, relaxing day by the pool.
