Katakolon, Greece

Posted on August 27, 2007

Katakolon was interesting, in that there really wasn’t anything to do there. There were some gift shops and restaurants by the pier, and a small beach beyond that. It kind of reminds me of the Caribbean, where everything slows down to a really relaxing pace. So that’s what I thought, that this place is just like Grand Cayman or Jamaica, minus the snorkeling of the Cayman Islands or the in-your-face souvenir vendors of Jamaica.

We walked through the small town and onto the beach. The sand was really fine and soft in some areas, and in others it was compacted so much it felt like a paved road. The water was cool, much cooler than I expected in the hot weather. There were lots of jellyfish in the water. I don’t know what kind they are, but I assume they’re not harmful to humans, as there were quite a few people swimming or playing in the water.

As we were walking down the beach, I could hear a person yelling. Apparently vendors still sell their fruits and vegetables from the back of their trucks. They drive down the beach, stop behind every other beach house, and yell out what they’re selling. I thought the first guy was loud. After he drives off, another one comes around, but this time this guy had a loudspeaker attached to the top of his truck! I think I heard him from a couple blocks away. At least he saved his voice, and he didn’t have to get out of his pickup truck to yell out what he’s selling.

Next time, in Katakolon, give me a lounge chair and a tropical drink on the beach, and I’m set.
